01 The World’s Biggest Producers of Chocolate

Belgium is world-renowned for its chocolate, producing over 220,000 tons annually! The country is home to more than 2,000 chocolatiers and its pralines are a famous Belgian specialty. With a stock exceeding 800 tonnes, Brussels Airport is the world’s largest selling point for chocolate.

02 Belgian fries

Despite their name, “French” fries are actually believed to have originated in Belgium, where they’re called “frites” or “frieten”. They’re traditionally served with mayonnaise, not ketchup!

03 Birthplace of the Smurfs and Tintin

Belgium is famous for its comic book culture, including world-famous characters like Tintin and the Smurfs. Brussels even has a comic strip route with murals dedicated to these iconic characters.

04 Bonjour, Hallo, Guten Tag

Belgium has three official languages—Dutch, French, and German. The country is divided into linguistic regions: Flanders (Dutch), Wallonia (French), and a small German-speaking community in the east. Brussels, the capital, is officially bilingual (French and Dutch).

05 Waffle central

Did you know there are actually two types of Belgian waffles? There is a Brussels Waffle and the Liege Waffle. Brussels Waffle is right angled corners, bigger than the other waffles, it’s crunchy on the outside, airier and lighter on the inside. Liege Waffle has no right angled corners, it’s not crunchy from the outside, it’s doughier and sweeter.

06 The Atomium

This iconic Brussels landmark is a huge structure shaped like an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Built for the 1958 World Expo, it’s one of Belgium’s most famous symbols.

07 Home of beer

Belgium is famous for its beer, producing more than 1,500 different varieties, including Trappist beers brewed by monks. Belgian beer culture is so significant it’s recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

08 Castles

Belgium boasts more castles per square kilometer than any other country in the world! There are over 3,000 castles in the country, some of which are still private residences.

Brussels is not only the capital of Belgium but also serves as the de facto capital of the European Union, as it hosts many of the EU’s key institutions, as well as NATO’s headquarters.

10 Rich in art

Belgium has a storied art history, being home to famous painters like Peter Paul Rubens, René Magritte, and Jan van Eyck. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels houses many of these masterpieces.
